HP and Dell delivered considerably more laptops despite chip shortages

HP and Dell delivered significantly more laptops in the second quarter of 2021 than in the same period in 2020. HP delivered 44 percent more laptops, Dell received 76 percent more orders for Alienware laptops.

In announcing its second quarter 2021 results, HP reports that it delivered 44 percent more laptops than in the same quarter a year ago. Chromebooks made up 20 percent of the number of laptops the company shipped. HP delivered 5 percent fewer desktops. Delivery numbers pushed HP’s laptop revenue up 47 percent and desktop revenue down 8 percent. Sales from consumer PCs increased by 72 percent, that of business PCs by 10 percent. HP expects demand for PCs to remain high this year and the shift from laptop to desktop to continue. The company does point out that chip shortages have a negative effect on deliveries, which was also the case in the past quarter.

Dell also posted positive results for its Client Solutions Group. The company reports that orders for XPS laptops were up 21 percent in the quarter versus last year, and that of Alienware gaming laptops by as much as 76 percent. In the enterprise market, Dell calls “double-digit growth” in orders for Latitude and Precision systems and business Chromebooks. According to Dell, the numbers show that the PC is an essential product and the company claims that the number of PCs in households is still increasing and refresh cycles are increasing with the migration from laptop to desktop. Dell also expects demand for PCs to remain high and the company also reports the negative impact of chip shortages. According to Dell, the prices of components are going to rise and it will pass on those price increases, with the company indicating that it will look at how that will affect demand.
