A majority of the House of Representatives wants call credit to be kept for at least six months. The House wants Minister Henk Kamp of Economic Affairs to regulate this in law as soon as possible. In many cases, call credit is now only valid for a month.

Not only opposition parties CDA, PVV, SP and D66 support the plan to keep calling credit valid for at least six months, the ruling party PvdA is also in favor. “I think the current month is really too short,” says PvdA MP Astrid Oosenbrug oppositer the AD. D66 MP Kees Verhoeven also thinks it is ‘high time’ that call credit has a longer shelf life. The plan will be presented in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

Coalition party VVD is against it, although the providers are allowed to communicate more clearly about the rates and conditions used by that party. According to the Consumers’ Association, the providers receive 68 million euros a month in expired call credit. That equates to almost 100 euros per person per year. D66 MP Kees Verhoeven states that many users take higher bundles as a precaution, because providers charge high rates when someone calls outside their bundle. However, this leaves them with a lot of minutes, which they lose after a month.
