Gearbox and Blackbird Interactive have published a new gameplay trailer for Homeworld 3. It shows the typical gameplay of the Homeworld-rts space games, but also how large structures can be used, for example, for surprise attacks.

Blackbird Interactive CEO Rob Cunningham said in a statement that Homeworld 3 will offer “deeper strategy and decision-making capabilities” and “simpler controls.” He didn’t elaborate further, but he probably meant, among other things, the presence of large objects and structures that will be present on the battlefield during the single player campaign. Witness the trailer, these offer the chance to take cover from incoming projectiles, but also give them the ability to perform surprise attacks.

The typical graphics and audio are also evident in the trailer, as are some of the game series’ signature gameplay elements. It is clear, for example, that the use of harvesters to collect space dust and thus earn money to be able to manufacture more and better units is still present. This also applies to the deployment of different classes of ships, attack groups with carriers and the possibility to seize enemy ships.

The original Homeworld came out in 1999 and its successor Homeworld 2 in 2003. In between there was Homeworld: Cataclysm from 2000 and Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak appeared in 2016. The latter game is set on the desert planet of Kharak and should be seen as a prequel to the original Homeworld. Unlike the other Homeworld games, Deserts of Kharak does not take place in space. In 2015, Gearbox also released Homeworld Remastered. Homeworld 3 should be released in the first half of 2023.
