No Man’s Sky turns five this week and developer Hello Games is celebrating with a teaser for its upcoming Frontiers update. It is the seventeenth free expansion of the game. Few details are known about the upcoming Frontiers update.

Hello Games announces upcoming Frontiers update in a PlayStation blog post, also looking back at the past five years. The accompanying trailer states that the expansion will be available for free to all players of No Man’s Sky, just like all previous major updates that the game received after release. The update would appear ‘soon’. Few details about the update are yet known.

“In some ways Frontiers is just another update, but in other ways it’s a missing piece of the science fiction fantasy that we’ve always wanted to add and is very fitting for our fifth anniversary,” Murray said. He indicates that he will share more details soon. “There’s still a lot we want to try. The next step in that journey is not far away. Soon we will have more to share about Frontiers.”

No Man’s Sky was released on August 9, 2016 for PS4 and a few days later for PC. The game was not well received upon release due to missing features and performance issues. The game has since received several free expansions, in which the game has been significantly improved and developer Hello Games has added many new features.

For example, ten weeks after release, the studio released a Foundations update that allowed players to build their own base. In 2018 the game got multiplayer. Meanwhile, the game includes vehicles, VR support and an online mode, expeditions, controllable mechs and more extensive underwater worlds. The game is now also available on Xbox consoles and the company released an improved version for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S last year.
