Jack Tretton, the head of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, resigns. It would not be a forced departure. According to Tretton, it is time for ‘the next chapter’ in his career. He will be succeeded by Shawn Layden, who has been with Sony for 15 years.

Jack Tretton brings the news himself through the official PlayStation Blog. Tretton is a founding member of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, which has been in existence since 1995. He played a major role in the popularization of the PlayStation in the US.

Tretton was also heavily involved in the development of the consoles and was part of the team responsible for production and marketing of the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Move and PlayStation Vita. Tretton turned Sony into a major player in the American market. For example, PlayStation 2 sold more than 50 million copies in the US. The PlayStation 4 also sells well. On the day of its introduction, 1 million copies of Sony’s latest console were sold. Tretton also presented Sony’s press conference during the annual E3 from 2007 and became the western face of Sony.

Tretton’s last working day is March 31. Shawn Layden, now SCEA vice president, will succeed Tretton. Layden was previously president of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan. He is also a founding member of Sony Network Entertainment International. Like Tretton, Layden is a veteran; he has been with Sony for 15 years.
