The sales success of GTA IV has been recognized by Guinness with an official entry that the game enters the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest entertainment release of all time.

Last week it was already clear that the day of the release was good for 3.6 million sales, and the game sold 6 million times in the first week. The first 24 hours brought in Take Two $ 310 million. This has surpassed Microsoft’s Halo 3 from the fall of 2007; that game grossed $170 million on its first day.

Guinness is late press release not after emphasizing that GTA IV actually broke the launch day sales record in entertainment, and not just games. Halo 3 already surpassed the highest grossing film; that was Spiderman 3, which grossed $60 million in its first 24 hours. The entertainment record holder so far has been Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which “only” raked in $220 million on its first day of sales.

The record entry for GTA IV is in the Gamers Edition of the famous Guinness record book, this edition is already on the shelves in Great Britain. The general version of the Guinness Book of World Records will appear later this year, probably the brewer will also make room for GTA IV here.
