Google: Unlimited storage is not important to most Workspace customers
According to Google, only “a relatively small number” of G Suite subscribers use the “full capabilities” of unlimited storage. That would underlie the decision to no longer give the Business Standard subscription with Workspace unlimited storage, and the change of subscriptions from Google G Suite to Workspace announced this week. With G Suite there were three subscriptions, Basic, Business and Enterprise. At Workspace, a fourth option has been added, Business Plus and the regular Business has been renamed to Business Standard. With that name change, the unlimited storage capacity of Business has quietly expired. Now there is a maximum of 2TB or 5TB per user, with Business Standard and Business Plus respectively. Incidentally, G Suite Business had a 1TB per person limitation when there were four or fewer users in an organization, although Google did not appear to be actively deploying that limitation. During the announcement, Google did not specify why it had changed the unlimited storage capacity. A spokesperson now tells Android Police that this option of unlimited data storage was only used by a relatively small number of customers. With the new subscriptions, that possibility has therefore been removed, to make way for functions that would offer additional added value to the customer, the spokesperson said. An example is the ability to record Meet calls in the Business Standard subscription. With a minimum of 2TB per user, customers still have enough storage space, the spokesperson said. Incidentally, the storage capacity with an Enterprise subscription is unlimited, the spokesperson confirms to the site. Current G Suite subscribers can use the unlimited storage capacity as long as their subscription is still running. However, when subscribers switch to a Workspace Business subscription, the restriction will take effect.
