Google shows prototypes of Pixel 2 and Pixelbook

Google gives a behind-the-scenes look at the design team of its products. In a blog post, the search giant showcases early iterations of the Pixel 2 smartphone and the Pixelbook laptop. Google also shows a number of design sketches of the Daydream headset.

The photos of the prototypes and sketches accompany an interview with designer Ivy Ross, who heads the Google design team. The photos show that Google has made several iterations of the Pixel 2, all of which have the signature two-tone back. The difference is in the shape of the housing, the placement of the camera and the fingerprint scanner.

The photo of the Pixelbook prototypes seems to indicate that Google mainly doubted the color scheme on the back of the 2-in-1. In any case, the published photo does not show much difference in other areas.

Google doesn’t show actual prototypes of the Daydream holder for smartphones, but a photo does show many different design sketches and 3D renders of a hinge.

Major hardware manufacturers do not often provide insight into prototypes and design sketches of their products, but information sometimes comes out through other channels. A prototype of the iPhone 4 became public after someone found the device on the floor of a bar. HTC has also left a prototype lying on the floor of a restaurant and Microsoft seems to have accidentally sent a prototype to a customer long before the announcement of the Xbox One.
