Google releases 1.0 version of iot operating system Android Things

Google released the 1.0 version of its internet of things operating system Android Things. Part of the new release is support for new hardware from different manufacturers.

Google announces that support has been added for three so-called sometimes which stands for system on module and is comparable to a soc. These are copies based on the i.MX8M from NXP, the SDA212 by Qualcomm and the MT8516 hardware from MediaTek. These can count on long-term support for a period of three years. According to the release notes of the 1.0 version, there is support for, among others, the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B for prototyping – and development purposes. Furthermore, Google has provided its Android Things Console which allows users to control devices, to provide a new interface.
Google presented its Android Things platform at the end of 2016 and has since had eight developer previews released. It states that the latter has now been downloaded more than 100,000 times. The search giant claims that performing automatic updates is one of the key features of Android Things. This is therefore automatically enabled on devices. That way they are always provided with the latest security updates.
Google says to have worked with manufacturers of various devices that came out of the system, such as smart speakers from LG and smart displays from Lenovo, LG and JBL.
