Google has now made the live translations feature that previously only worked on Google Pixel phones with Pixel Buds available for any Assistant-compatible set of headphones.

Google has adjusted the help text on the page about translating with the Google Pixel Buds. Where previously it was said that only Pixel hardware was capable of this feature, it now requires an Assistant-compatible smartphone and headset, expanding the offering. The change caught the eye of Droid Life. Headphones such as the OnePlus Bullets, Bose QuietComfort 35 II and the Sony WH-1000XM2 and XM3, for example, support Google Assistant.

Live translations allow users to have a conversation in two different languages at the same time. One user puts on the headphones and the other uses the smartphone itself. The speakers and microphone of the two devices are used to ensure that both users can speak and listen in a language of their choice. The translation is done in the cloud, via the telephone’s internet connection.
