Google has announced a broad mobile platform for virtual reality. Daydream includes specifications for smartphones, headsets and controllers so that they work together effortlessly. In addition, Android’s vr mode and numerous apps fall under the platform.

The platform is based on headsets into which a smartphone has to be inserted. The smartphones that, according to Google, provide a good VR experience will be labeled ‘Daydream-ready’ and according to the company, major manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, Asus, Huawei and HTC will come with smartphones that meet the requirements.

In addition to requirements for smartphones, Google has created reference designs for headsets and a controller. The controller includes a clickable trackpad and an orientation sensor for operation in the virtual space. The manufacturer further claims that the entire Android stack is optimized for Daydream, with particular attention to performance and low latency.

In addition, Google optimizes many apps for VR display. For example, Play Movies, Photos, Streetview and YouTube can be used completely in VR. In addition, third parties are coming up with apps that work in conjunction with Daydream, such as IMAX and Hulu for video viewing. The apps will have a special section in the Play Store, which will also be fully accessible in 360-degree mode. The platform will be released in the fall and then the first smartphones, headsets and controllers from manufacturers should also be available.

Google first showed cardboard VR glasses at I/O two years ago under the name Cardboard. Since then, it came out with a second model and manufacturers released countless compatible VR glasses for low prices. It was Google’s first step into the VR headset market.

Since that time, Samsung has already introduced the Gear VR, which only fits a few high-end smartphones from the manufacturer. Oculus released the Rift this spring, while HTC released the Vive. Both are VR headsets that require a powerful PC. It was speculated in advance that Google would also come up with such powerful VR glasses at Google I/O, but the company has opted for an open mobile platform that still uses a smartphone as a screen.
