It is rumored that Google CEO Larry Page has handed over some of his duties to Sundar Pichai, who is already in charge of Android and Chrome, among others. Page would step back to focus on “the bigger picture”.

That information comes from an internal memo, which the usually well-informed Re/code claims to have. The memo explains to Google employees that Pichai will be in charge of many business units, including some key services such as the search engine and Maps. Pichai was already in charge of Android, Chrome and apps.

Despite his step back, Page continues to play an important role within Google. Among other things, he is in charge of Google X and the recently acquired Nest. By taking on fewer tasks, Page can better focus on “the big picture”, Re/code quotes from the leaked memo. The CEO is said to be concerned about the lack of innovation at Google and can focus better on existing and new products with fewer tasks.

Although he is handing over many of his duties, it appears that Page will retain his title as CEO. According to the sources of Re/code, Pichai will not formally be given another position within Google and nothing will be announced.

Sixteen years ago, Larry Page founded Google with Sergey Brin. He obtained the CEO position in 2011 by succeeding Eric Schmidt. Pichai has worked for Google since 2004 and has quickly made a career within the company.
