GlobalFoundries and AMD have developed the first sample of an AMD chip with finfets on a 14nm process. The test chip was produced on the second generation of the 14nm process, but details are still missing.
GlobalFoundries and AMD talk about silicon success at a demonstration of an AMD 14nm finfet chip, which probably refers to a working sample. The test chip rolled off the production line at GlobalFoundries Fab 8 in New York. It concerns the 14 lpp process, the second generation of the technology. GlobalFoundries currently produces based on 14lpe designs, but the lpp should provide roughly 10 percent better performance, according to AnandTech.
It is unclear whether it is a gpu, cpu or apu. 14lpp production should start in the fourth quarter, with large-scale production to take place in 2016. GlobalFoundries is collaborating with Samsung to develop the 14nm process. Among other things, the upcoming Zen chips will be baked at 14nm. AMD has high hopes for these processors.
