Microsoft will release Gears 5: Hivebusters on December 15. It is an extension of the single player campaign. The dlc can be bought for 20 euros, but Game Pass Ultimate subscribers get the expansion for free.

In the Hivebusters expansion, players take on the role of Lahni, Keegan and Mac, characters who previously appeared in Gears 5’s Escape mode. The three together form the Scorpio Squad and are on a mission to destroy a Swarm hive together. The campaign expansion is set in the volcanic Galangi Islands and will take three hours, according to the creators.

It is possible to play the expansion in co-op with up to three players. This can be done locally with split-screen or online. The expansion also gives players access to Ultimate Abilities in story mode for the first time. Furthermore, sixteen new Achievements have been added.

Like Gears 5 itself, the expansion has graphics enhancements for Xbox Series X and S. The DLC is also playable on Xbox One and One X. Gears 5: Hivebusters is available for purchase from the Microsoft Store and Steam. Players must also have the base game to play the expansion.

Gears 5 is a title from Microsoft’s own Xbox Game Studios and therefore also included in the Game Pass subscription. Although all own Microsoft titles are included in the subscription, this does not apply to dlc and extensions. Microsoft makes an exception for Gears 5: Hivebusters. The expansion is only available for free as part of Game Pass Ultimate, the most expensive subscription form that costs 13 euros per month.
