Gearbox has been working on a new Tales from the Borderlands game for years and it will be released this year. The interactive story gets completely new characters and a new story. Substantive details about this are not yet known; a formal introduction will follow in the summer.
The new game will be developed by Gearbox itself and published by 2K Games. The first installment of Tales from the Borderlands came out in 2014 and was made by Telltale Games. Gearbox Director Randy Pitchford says on PAX East that the team really appreciates the format of that game. That would be apparent from the fact that characters from that game have made their appearance in Borderlands 3.
According to Pitchford, Gearbox has been working behind the scenes on the new part for years. The CEO promises completely new characters and a new story. A formal introduction with more details will follow in the summer and the game should be released later this year. It is not yet clear for which platforms the interactive story will appear.
