Fortnite’s recently introduced standalone battle royale mode was played collectively by a total of 525,000 players worldwide at its peak across all platforms. Developer and publisher Epic Games has announced this.

Epic Games reported on Twitter not only that last weekend the battle royale mode hit its peak of 525,000 players, but also that there were 3.7 million active daily users. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is still much larger in terms of number of players in this genre, but Fortnite Battle Royale is already fully playable on the consoles, unlike PUBG. Microsoft announced during the E3 trade show that PUBG will eventually come to the Xbox One.

Fortnite became available through Early Access in July. Patch v1.6 was released in mid-September, which added a Battle Royale mode. Fortnite is free to download, with the pvp section accessible. Only the pve part has to be purchased. So players can use the Battle Royal mode for free. Hundreds of players have to battle it out on one large playing field. The last player standing wins. The Battle Royale mode has been officially available since September 26.

Fortnite was described by Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney as “a cross between Minecraft and Left 4 Dead.” Players must scour the randomly generated game landscape in search of items and resources so they can craft weapons and fortresses to defend against the incessant waves of zombie-like enemies called Husks. The game can be played alone or with other players. This is the original game Fortnite; so this gameplay is different from that in Fortnite Battle Royale.

The game is available for PC, macOS, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The game cannot be found on PCs on Steam, but is available through the Epic Games Launcher.
