Final Fantasy XIV, the mmorpg of the game franchise, is getting a PlayStation 5 version. Owners of the PlayStation 4 version can get a free upgrade to the next-gen version. There will also be an open beta.

The open beta will take place from April 13, publisher Square Enix said, and the release should follow “shortly after.” The Japanese company does not report how long that period will last. Although the upgrade is free for existing owners, the game will still have a monthly fee, which will continue. Those costs are 11 to 13 euros per month, depending on how long the membership lasts. All this is apparent from the two-hour live presentation of the game, of which GameSpot has placed the relevant part in a shorter clip.

The PlayStation 5 version of the game will have graphics quality and performance modes. The quality mode runs in 4k resolution and the performance mode switches to 1440p. What kind of frame rate one can expect at 1440p, the presenters do not mention. In any case, both modes will benefit from ‘drasically faster loading times’, which are also shown in the trailer. The game is already playable on the PlayStation 5 through backward compatibility.

In addition to a next-gen version, the game also gets a new expansion. That will be the fourth. Endwalker contains the ending of the story of Hydaelyn and Zodiark. In the course of this story, they will have to endure an “even greater calamity than ever before” and travel as far as Hydaelyn and even to the moon. Furthermore, the expansion will ‘prepare for new adventures’. There will also be a new job and a level cap that goes from 80 to 90. The expansion should be released in the fall.
