Europol, in collaboration with various authorities, has arrested fifteen people because they are suspected of committing various forms of cybercrime. The suspects are mainly teenagers and young adults.

The suspects allegedly used remote access trojans or rats, which could give them access to other people’s computers. For example, they may have been able to commit internet crime, Europol reports. This could include stealing personal information, carrying out DDoS attacks, and extortion.

A total of fifteen people were arrested, including teenagers and young adults. The arrests have been made in Estonia, France, Romania, Latvia, Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom. A French team led the investigation that was part of the so-called Empact project, in which various European investigative authorities work together. Similar investigations and operations are expected to be conducted in 2015.

According to Europol, the action was important to make people aware of the danger of such malware. BlackShades and DarkComet, among others, are mentioned as well-known remote access tools.
