European Commissioner: Twitter/X does not adhere to DSA moderation rules
Twitter/X does not comply with the rules on moderation imposed by the European Digital Services Act, says European Commissioner Thierry Breton. In this way, content that countries have designated as illegal remains online, while the company has to take it offline.
Breton writes in a publicly released letter to Twitter/X owner Elon Musk that he has three objections to the company’s policy. Firstly, changes make the rules that Twitter/X applies unclear. Secondly, the company does not take content that has been identified as illegal offline and thirdly, the platform does not take action against the spread of misinformation.
Breton has requested a response within 24 hours. Musk does not respond substantively, but only asks for a list of specific violations and says that Twitter/X has a policy that is ‘open source and transparent’. Breton responded by saying that his team is ready to help comply with the DSA and that it is up to Musk to translate his policy into action.
Elon Musk has in the past repeatedly promised that the platform will comply with DSA legislation, including with European Commissioner Thierry Breton. The company underwent a voluntary content moderation stress test in July, under the responsibility of the European Union.
