Fortnite should grow into a ‘metaverse’ this year, a digital world to hang out in, Epic Games director Tim Sweeney said in an interview. He wants Fortnite and the underlying Unreal Engine to grow into more than a game and game engine.

Growing Fortnite into a ‘metaverse’ is possible because of the large community of people who play the game, Sweeney claims in the interview with Business Insider. For example, there are 250 million players of the game, while 100 million people have tried Creative Mode to build things in the game world together.

It is unknown how Epic will give shape to the idea of a ‘metaverse’, such as exists in science fiction books and films such as Ready Player One. “There’s nothing quite like it right now, but we’re seeing it come out this year. It’s exciting.”

Recently DJ Marshmello held a concert in Fortnite, an event that attracted ten million visitors within the game. Sweeney says more and more things will happen in Fortnite in the coming period that should make it “more than a game.”
