EA working with four studios on new Battlefield game and making mobile version

Four EA studios are working on the new Battlefield game, which will be released at the end of this year. It is the largest development team for a game in the series to date. There will also be a mobile Battlefield game, which is being made by a fifth studio and will be released in 2022.

Play tests are underway with the new Battlefield game, but EA hasn’t shown anything of the game yet. The publisher promises ‘all-out warfare on an epic scale’, with more players than ever and ‘unexpected moments’ and ‘game-changing destruction’. Earlier there were rumors of 128 player maps and a return to modern warfare. EA has not confirmed that yet. The game will be released at the end of this year for PC and the latest consoles. It is not yet clear whether the game will also come to the previous generation consoles. EA says it will provide more information in the coming months.

DICE is Battlefield’s primary developer, but will be joined by three other studios this year: Criterion, DICE Los Angeles, and EA Gothenburg. The first three are responsible for working out ‘the shared vision’ of the game, the latter ‘taking the technique to the next level’. According to EA, it is the largest Battlefield development team ever.

EA Gothenburg was known as Ghost Games between 2012 and 2020 and developed several Need For Speed games in that capacity. Need For Speed Heat was the studio’s last game, which was poorly received, and EA moved NFS game development to Criterion, which previously made fame with the Burnout games.

Battlefield Mobile in 2022

EA is also working on a mobile Battlefield game. It is made by Industrial Toys. That studio released iOS game Midnight Star in 2015 and was acquired by EA in 2018. The studio will work closely with DICE for the mobile version. This is ‘a completely new game’ for smartphones and tablets, which is separate from the PC and console version.

The mobile Battlefield game was developed specifically for mobile platforms and built from the ground up, EA says. According to the makers, it will be a game that revolves around skills and a test phase will start soon. The game will be released sometime in 2022 and EA promises to announce more details soon.
