Dropbox ends public folder support

Dropbox will stop supporting the public folder next year. The web storage service has announced this. For free users, the folders will no longer be usable from March, for paying users they will be removed in September.

Dropbox mentions the shutdown on the site and has also sent users an email. It states that users can share files with others in other ways. “The public folder was the first method we used to share items. Since then, we’ve developed even better ways to securely share and collaborate with team members.”

The files will remain in users’ storage, but will be private by default from then on. “If you’d like to keep sharing files in your public folder, you can create new shared links. In that case, don’t forget to send the new URLs to your colleagues.”

The public folders are used for the distribution of images and texts, for example. According to the web storage service, public folders were not present in new accounts as of October 2012. The Public folder is the default in the list of folders for any Dropbox account prior to that time.
