Disney and the Chinese Tencent have announced Avatar: Reckoning, a mmorpg for Android and iOS. The game should be released this year for the two platforms and feature a mixture of co-op and player versus player gameplay.

According to the announcement, shared by multiple media outlets, including WCCFtech, it is a shooter game optimized for touchscreen devices. The game runs on Unreal Engine 4, which is somewhat striking since the developer behind the game has already put a teaser video online in which it gives an insight into what it is all possible with Unreal Engine 5.

That developer is Archosaur Games, a Chinese studio that has released mobile games like Dragon Raja, World of Kings and Epic War: Thrones in the past. The game is published by Level Infinite, the game publisher operating under Tencent. Another involved company mentioned is Lightstorm Entertainment, founded by Avatar director James Cameron.

Avatar: Reckoning isn’t the only Avatar game in the works. Massive Entertainment, known for World in Conflict and The Division, is also working on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. That game will run in the Snowdrop engine and will be a first-person game. The game is set to be released in 2022 and skips the previous generation of consoles: it comes to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Google Stadia and Amazon Luna.

Avatar is originally a 2009 Hollywood movie. It takes place in the year 2154 on the fictional moon Pandora, where the blue alien race the Na’vi live. Humanity invades the planet to mine a precious mineral. In the film, thanks to advanced technology, a human is in the body of a Na’vi and so he infiltrates the race. Gradually, however, he turns to the side of the aliens and fights with them against humanity. The film also came in a 3D version and has been a major driver of its popularity ever since.
