Developer Rocket League: Supporting 120fps on PS5 is more work than on Xbox

Running a PS4 game on the PS5 with 120fps support is a lot more work than an Xbox One game on the Xbox Series X. So says Psyonix, the developer of Rocket League. The soccer game does run at 120fps on the Xbox Series X, but not on the PS5.

Psyonix did not prioritize enabling 120fps support on the PS5 through a different focus. “Enabling 120fps on the Xbox Series X and S is a minor patch, but enabling it on the PS5 requires a full native port due to the way backward compatibility works on the console, ” the developer told Eurogamer .

The site speculates it’s because the Xbox One platform has had 120fps support for several years, although games on the console rarely topped 60fps. As a result, there is now less work to enable 120fps. On the PS4, only PSVR games support up to 120fps. Both consoles came out in the last few weeks and both can show games at 4k resolution at 120fps.
