Dell Introduces 4K Monitor with Built-in Colorimeter and Thunderbolt 3
Dell has announced a new monitor with a built-in colorimeter. The UP2720Q has a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels and a screen size of 27″. The screen can display one hundred percent of the Adobe RGB color gamut and supports Thunderbolt 3.
A colorimeter is used by professionals to calibrate colors very precisely, so that they are portrayed more realistically. This is important, for example, for designers and photographers, who often have to work with very accurate colors during their work. The UP2720Q is therefore mainly aimed at graphic designers, photographers, video editors and other design professionals.
Dell is not the first manufacturer to integrate a colorimeter into a monitor. HP and Eizo have done the same before. A number of HP studio displays already contain a built-in colorimeter, as do some Eizo screens. The UP2720Q is the first monitor with integrated calibration hardware from Dell.
The UP2720Q includes an IPS panel with edge lighting and support for 10-bit color. The panel can display 100 percent of the Adobe RGB color space. The monitor also supports 98 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut and 80 percent of the bt.2020 gamut. The screen has a maximum brightness of 250 cd/m² and does not support HDR. The display comes with a monitor hood to prevent glare. The UP2720Q also supports Thunderbolt 3 for receiving image signals. A laptop with a maximum power of 90W can be charged simultaneously via this connection.
The monitor has four USB 3.2 gen 2 type A ports, two HDMI 2.0a connections and a single displayport 1.4 connector. The screen has a vesa 100mm mount for separate monitor arms. The panel weighs 5.55 kilograms, not including the supplied monitor stand. The pixel response time is 8ms in normal mode, but can be reduced to 6ms in a separate, ‘fast mode’. The screen will be released on January 15, 2020, and carries a suggested retail price of USD 1999. Converted and including VAT, this amounts to approximately 2173 euros. It is unknown whether the screen will also be released in Europe on January 15.
