Deliveries of Sony Xperia smartphones halve

Sony delivered less than half the number of smartphones in the past three months than it delivered in the same period last year. This is evident from the manufacturer’s quarterly figures. Other branches of Sony are doing better.

According to Sony, the decrease is due to the focus on more expensive models, which has reduced the number, but the average selling price has increased. In addition, Sony has limited the loss on the mobile branch. With deliveries of 3.4 million smartphones last quarter, Sony is far from the top five, all of which delivered more than 14 million devices in the same period. Sony is next to Microsoft and Apple the third well-known manufacturer whose deliveries fell sharply.

Sony presented three new models in February, the X Performance, X and XA, but they will only be released in a month. The manufacturer did not release any new models in the past quarter, but did have the Z5 Premium with 4k screen, Z5 and Z5 Compact on the shelves.

Things were less bad for other product groups. PS4 shipments fell 4.2 percent and TV deliveries fell 11.1 percent. The deliveries of cameras have been bad for years and this quarter was no exception.

Partly due to the decline in turnover from smartphones, Sony as a group had to deal with a decrease in turnover of 1.3 percent. The Japanese company did record a net profit of 147.8 billion yen, converted around 1.2 billion euros. This is a significant increase compared to the same period last year.
