Data of at least 282 people stolen at data breach municipality of Almelo
The data breach at the municipality of Almelo that came to light two weeks ago has resulted in the leakage of data from at least 282 people. The data would have been stolen via a ‘plug-in’ that was active on an employee’s computer between 2 and 9 September.
A spokesperson for the municipality could not yet say what kind of plug-in it is. The letter, which was sent to the 282 people involved, states that it is an ‘add-on’. The ongoing investigation has also shown that the leaked data in any case includes social security numbers, whether or not in combination with the name, date of birth and the registration number of a car, Tubantia writes.
The 282 persons concerned applied for or already received social assistance benefits during the period in which the data was stolen. In the case of the recipients, an investigation was underway into the right to social assistance benefits.
The data comes from the network environment of Werkplein Twente, which also includes residents of the municipalities of Tubbergen, Dinkelland and Wierden, within a partnership between UWV and municipalities. In total, 20GB of data leaked.
