Darpa experiments with Oculus Rift as a hacker tool

The research arm of the US military Darpa has plans to use the Oculus Rift to provide insight into structures in network systems. This information should help hackers wage cyber wars. It’s just a test for now.

The plans were laid out by Darpa in an interview with Wired. According to Frank Pound, who leads ‘Plan X’ on behalf of Darpa, the virtual reality glasses Oculus Rift can be used to create three-dimensional images of networks. “You can look to the left, you can look to the right, and you can see different subnets of information. It’s like swimming in the Internet,” Pound said. The images captured with the Oculus Rift are explained in a demonstration video.

By making network structures transparent, it should be easier for American hackers to make decisions in a cyber war and fewer mistakes should be made. Darpa wants virtual reality to play a role in Plan X, a collection of practical software tools that the US military uses to break into computer systems.

According to Darpa, the use of the Oculus Rift is mainly a proof of concept. It is still unclear when the US military will actually use virtual reality in their hacking attempts. Darpa does state that it has serious plans to give the Oculus Rift a place in its arsenal of digital weapons.
