D-Link has announced a new 802.11ac router. The DIR-816L offers the possibility to access data on a connected USB storage device via the mobile app mydlink SharePort over the internet. However, the budget router does not have gigabit Ethernet ports.

With speeds of up to 433Mbit/s on the 5GHz band and 300Mbit/s on the 2.4GHz frequency, the DIR-816L, which has two external antennas and supports dualband, offers relatively slow speeds for an 802.11ac router. The maximum Ethernet speed of 100Mbit/s on the five connections is also on the low side: almost all routers now offer gigabit Ethernet ports.

D-Link thinks it can partly compensate for the limited speeds on the budget router with mobile apps that should simplify the accessibility of data over the network. For example, the mydlink SharePort app, available for iOS and Android, promises simple yet secure access to data on a connected USB device. The user can also set up some management functions of the router via the mobile app and configure a guest network. D-Link has a suggested retail price of EUR 64.95 for the DIR-816L.
