General Motors plans to launch a large fleet of self-driving cars next year. The automaker is reportedly doing this with the Chevrolet Bolt, a fully electric car that is still barely available to consumers.

This is stated by Reuters news agency on the basis of two sources who are said to be familiar with the plans. General Motors, owner of car brand Chevrolet, is said to be planning a large-scale test with self-driving cars. Thousands of cars should be on the road as early as next year, which is reported to create the largest fleet of self-driving cars to date.

The Bolt will be used for the test, a fully electric car that has recently been launched on the market, although the car is only slowly being delivered in the United States. The thousands of vehicles that will be made available for the experiment next year will be used by Lyft, best known as a car-sharing service. The self-driving variants of the Bolt could therefore be used to book rides, although details are still lacking about how the collaboration between General Motors and Lyft will work.

In Europe, the Chevrolet Bolt will be marketed as the Opel Ampera-e. The car received a lot of interest during the development phase, because of the relatively large range of the battery, which is approximately 400 kilometers. A self-driving variant is not yet on the market.
