The British company Bullit Group has presented the Cat S62 Pro, a rugged smartphone with a thermal camera. Compared to the S61, the new phone has an improved FLIR thermal camera, but no air quality meter or laser meter.

The Cat S62 Pro comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660, which is clocked at up to 2.0GHz, 6GB of memory and 128GB of storage. Optionally, the storage can be expanded with a micro-SD card. Bullit acknowledges that the three-year-old Snapdragon 660 is a standout choice, but says it chose it because Qualcomm “will continue to support it for a long time to come.” Bullit claims that this soc can promise three years of security updates and an upgrade to Android version 11. The S62 Pro comes with Android 10 as standard.

As a thermal camera, the S62 Pro gets the FLIR Lepton 3.5 sensor. This has a resolution of 160×120 pixels, where the S61 had a thermal camera resolution of 80×60 pixels. Bullit claims the camera has a range of -20 to 400 degrees Celsius and can recognize a heat source at a distance of thirty meters. The user must be able to recognize the difference between humans and animals at twenty meters. The camera has a deviation of 5 degrees Celsius, but can measure temperature differences well, according to Bullit. By comparing these temperature differences, the Cat S62 Pro can be used for triage purposes, according to Bullit.

The screen is a 5.7 “LCD with a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels and is protected with a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 6. The telephone maker deliberately did not opt for an OLED screen, because it is more difficult to protect against fall damage. Bullit emphasizes the sturdiness. of the S62 Pro, which is ip68 and mil-spec-810G certified. This means that the phone is dust-proof, for example, and must be able to survive a 6-foot drop onto a steel plate. The S62 Pro is cleanable, according to Bullit with soap, alcohol or bleach.

The phone’s battery has a capacity of 4000mAh and is not interchangeable. As far as regular cameras are concerned, the Cat S62 Pro has a 12-megapixel sensor from Sony on the back and an 8-megapixel camera at the front. Bullit says he has adapted the camera software, making it easier, for example, to switch the image between the thermal camera and the regular camera.

There is a fingerprint scanner on the back of the device, and an adjustable yellow button on the side. The phone measures 158.5×76.7×11.9mm and weighs 248 grams. The phone uses a USB-C connection for charging, which supports Quick Charge 4. The phone will be available as single and dual SIM.

Where the S61 was still supplied with an air quality meter and laser meter, this is not the case with the S62 Pro. Bullit claims buyers hardly needed those features. The Cat S62 Pro costs 649 euros and should be available in the coming weeks.
