Carmack: Facebook login stays with Oculus and Quest gets monthly updates

By admin on January 12, 2021

John Carmack, chief technical officer of Oculus, says the mandatory Facebook login is here to stay for Oculus headset use, despite the criticism of this requirement. He also states that the aim is for the Quest headsets to receive software updates on a monthly basis.

carmack reports that getting feedback from users is a priority for Oculus. They can indicate their wishes for the Oculus Quest and Quest 2 via the Quest User Voice platform. There is, for example, the proposal that Oculus removes the mandatory Facebook login for the VR glasses. That proposal has more than four thousand votes and almost four hundred reactions.

Yet this is not going to happen, according to Carmack. “Facebook login is not going away. Given the climate, people may not believe it, but Facebook takes privacy extremely seriously.” According to him, it will take another ten years before users will recognize this, referring to Microsoft’s image with regard to security, which is said to have improved considerably compared to ten years ago. When the Facebook login required for the Quest 2 and upcoming Oculus headsets was announced last year, there was a storm of criticism.

Furthermore, Carmack reports that there will be many opportunities to add requested features, as Oculus’ commitment is to: monthly updates to be implemented with the Quest glasses. Requests for hardware adjustments make less sense, according to him, because this takes years.
