Canon will stop Irista’s cloud photo storage service next year

Canon will end its Irista cloud photo storage service in early 2020. On January 31, the service will be discontinued and all stored photos will be deleted. Users are urged to download their photos from the service as soon as possible.

Canon says it will stop with the service as the company wants to focus more on ‘imaging technology’ and connected services, including Canon image Gateway and Canon Camera Connect. There is therefore no alternative cloud service in the planning for the time being. Canon states that all data of Irista users will be deleted once the service goes offline. The company hereby indicates that any Canon ID accounts will be kept.

Canon launched the Irista service in 2014, as a successor to the Project 1709 cloud service. The service offered 15GB of free storage. For a fee, this could be increased to a maximum of 10TB. Canon indicates that the company will no longer collect subscription fees from October 29. The company also offers Irista users two months of free Adobe Lightroom with 1TB of storage, but after these two months, users have to pay for the service.

Users can still upload photos to the platform until January 31, but they say this is not recommended, as the content will be ‘removed as soon as possible’ after that date. Users can download photos in zip files of 4GB each. For example, according to Canon, the photos can be ‘downloaded in manageable blocks’. The zip files must be downloaded one by one. Any tags, photo ratings, titles and albums cannot be exported. The photo book service, which is part of Irista, will continue to operate until January 14, 2020.
