Canon has revealed all the details about its EOS R3 mirrorless camera. The new top model gets a completely new 24.1-megapixel sensor. That is a stacked cmos sensor of the full frame format. The camera will be released in November for 6100 euros.

The Canon EOS R3 is the highest positioned model in Canon’s lineup of mirrorless cameras. The device has a lower resolution than the previously released EOS R5, but as a result the maximum shooting speed is higher. The device also has eye autofocus, where the photographer can select a focus point of his choice by looking at it in the viewfinder. Canon used that Eye Control autofocus system on analog SLR cameras earlier in the 1990s.

The device achieves the maximum shooting speed of thirty frames per second, while maintaining autofocus, automatic exposure and the highest image quality, in the 14-bit raw format. The buffer has space for 540 jpeg files or 150 files in the raw format. When shooting at 30fps, the camera uses an electronic shutter. It has a range of 30 seconds to 1/6400th of a second. With the mechanical shutter, the maximum speed is 12fps.

The new 24.1-megapixel sensor works with Dual Pixel AF, where every pixel can be used for autofocus. The EOS R3 houses the Digic X image processor, which Canon previously used in the EOS R5 and EOS-1D X Mark III. The camera can calculate autofocus and exposure sixty times per second.

Canon provides the EOS R3 with an electronic viewfinder with an OLED panel with 5.76 million pixels. The viewfinder has a 60Hz and 120Hz mode. At the back of the 1015 gram camera is a tilting LCD with 4.2 million pixels. The EOS R3 has three memory card slots: two for UHS-II SD cards and one for CFexpress Type B cards.

The Canon EOS R3 can use the full sensor width of about six thousand pixels to film in 4k resolution. In 4k to 60fps, the camera uses all the pixels for this, resulting in oversampling. It is also possible to film in 4k at 120fps, but then subsampling is applied, which results in a somewhat lower image quality. It is also possible to record in 6k with 60fps raw video. This requires a CFexpress memory card that reaches 400MB/s.

Canon is targeting photojournalists, nature and sports photographers with the EOS R3. The device is available from November for a suggested retail price of 6100 euros. Canon is also introducing two new RF lenses: the 16mm f/2.8 STM and the 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM. These will be released in October with suggested retail prices of 350 and 750 euros respectively.
