Amazon has formally commissioned the previously discussed Blade Runner TV series. That reports film website Variety. The live-action series may be set fifty years after the events of the film Blade Runner 2049.

Variety writes that the series will be titled Blade Runner 2099. There are few details yet, but this title suggests that the series is set in a period fifty years after the events of the 2017 film Blade Runner 2049, which is the sequel to the original Blade Runner film from 1982.

Silka Luisa will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Ridley Scott, the director of the original Blade Runner, among others, will also take on a production role. Scott announced in November last year that a Blade Runner series was coming. Then there was talk of ten episodes of one hour each.

Vernon Sanders, the head of global television at Amazon Studios, says the new series will “uphold the intellect, themes and spirit of its film predecessors.” Two co-founders of involved production company Alcon Entertainment say they are “more than excited” to further expand the Blade Runner canon “into a new realm with the provocative storyline Silka created.” Further details about the project are not yet available.

Blade Runner is a 1982 science fiction film starring Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer. The story is loosely based on Do Android’s Dream of Electric Sheep?, by author Philip K. Dick. Blade Runner 2049 was released in 2017 as a sequel to the first film. This film was directed by Denis Villeneuve and stars Ryan Gosling.
