Bethesda has announced Orion, software that allows developers to optimize game engines for low-latency streaming playback. The game company demonstrated the technique with Doom 2016 on a smartphone.

Orion was developed by id Software and the technology can be used for any game and any platform. According to Bethesda, Orion reduces latency and bandwidth requirements, and the software complements the hardware that game streaming service providers use in their data centers.

Game makers could easily integrate Orion into their games using an SDK. Bethesda demonstrated Orion’s abilities using Doom displayed streaming on a smartphone. The company says it will be holding a public test of Orion ‘soon’, where people who sign up for the Doom Slayers Club can receive free Doom streaming. Initially, there will only be support for iOS devices with version 11 or later of that software.
