AU Optronics showcases new panels for monitors at the Touch Taiwan trade show. These include a 27″ and 32″ panel with 4k resolution and a backlight of mini LEDs for HDR playback with a maximum brightness of 1000cd/m2.

AUO does not indicate how many mini LEDs are used and how many dimmable zones the 27″ and 32″ panels have. The panels are intended for game monitors and have a refresh rate of 144Hz. AUO does not report which panel type it is, but it is presumably ahva panels that are comparable to ips. According to the manufacturer, the panels are suitable for making monitors that meet VESA’s DisplayHDR 1000 standard.

At the fair, AUO will also show panels for laptops, including a 15.6″ variant with a 4k resolution and a mini LED backlight. This ltps panel has 240 dimmable zones and a maximum brightness of 1000cd/m2. AUO also shows a 17 .3″ panel with 4k resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. This panel does not have a mini LED backlight, but it does have a relatively high maximum brightness of 600cd/m2. The response time would be 3ms.

The use of a mini LED backlight means that the lighting behind the LCD panel consists of many small LEDs. Presumably this will allow for more dimmable zones than is currently the case with monitors. Current top models such as the Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ and the Acer Predactor X27 have a backlight with 384 zones. Those monitors also have an AUO panel, but no mini LED backlight.

AUO said earlier this year that monitors with a mini LED backlight may hit the market by the end of this year. So far, no concrete product announcements of such screens have been made.
