Audi shows concept of A6 e-tron with range of ‘more than 700 km’
Audi shows a concept of its A6 e-tron. The electric car will be built on the PPE platform developed together with Porsche, with an 800V charging system. The concept model has several LED projectors. A production version will be released at the end of 2022.
Audi calls the A6 e-tron concept version a multi-model study that will be based on the Premium Platform Electric. The PPE platform was developed in collaboration with Porsche and will be used for multiple models, including SUVs, crossovers and sportbacks.
The concept version of the Audi A6 e-tron has dimensions of 4.96×1.96×1.44 meters. According to the car manufacturer, those dimensions are the same as those of a traditional A6, but it is a completely new aerodynamic design, with a Cw value of 0.22.
The A6 e-tron has a 100kWh battery pack with two electric motors, good for a power of 350kW and a torque of up to 800Nm. The PPE platform uses an 800V charging system, which allows charging with 270kW. According to Audi, the battery can be charged from 5 to 80 percent in 25 minutes. With 10 minutes of charging, 300 km of range could be ‘refueled’.
Depending on the chosen version, the A6 e-tron will have a range of 700 km according to the wltp standard, claims Audi. The fastest version takes four seconds to sprint from standstill to 100 kilometers per hour and the base model takes seven seconds. Audi has not disclosed further details about versions, as the model shown is a concept and not a production model.
The PPE platform has a battery between the axles, and the size of the battery pack and wheelbase is flexible. The platform can be equipped with an electric motor on each axle for four-wheel drive. Audi calls it the electric quattro. The first production model based on the PPE platform should appear at the end of 2022. The cars will be produced in both China and Europe and will be released worldwide.
LED projectors
The concept model has digital matrix lamps with LED and OLED technology, which can also be used for projection. For example, Audi states that the headlights have a resolution that is high enough to project games on a wall. A smartphone can then be used as a controller. The manufacturer does not report what the resolution is.
Also on the sides are LED projectors, which provide ‘dynamic light effects’ when getting in and out, for example by welcoming passengers with a text. these projectors can also be used to warn cyclists that the door is being opened. According to Audi, the OLED rear light strip makes it possible to set 3D light effects. To what extent such features will come to a production model remains to be seen. Audi will show the A6 e-tron concept this week at the Shanghai auto show.
