ASUS will release ROG Phone 5 at the end of March from 799 euros

ASUS has announced its ROG Phone 5. The Android 11 smartphone with Snapdragon 888-soc and 144Hz OLED screen appears in various variants, the cheapest of which costs 799 euros. The most expensive version with 18GB Lpddr5 costs 1299 euros.

ROG Phone 5 Ultimate

The base version of the ROG Phone 5 has 8GB of Lpddr5 memory and 128GB of UFS 3.1 flash storage. The most expensive variant contains 18GB Lpddr5 and 512GB flash storage. All versions have a 6000mAh battery and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888-soc with integrated 5G modem.

ASUS equips its latest gaming smartphone with a 6.78″ OLED screen from Samsung, with a resolution of 2448×1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 144Hz. The peak brightness is 1200cd/m². The housing measures 173x77x10mm and weighs 239 grams. In addition to a USB C connector, the phone also has a 3.5mm jack.

On the back is a primary 64-megapixel camera that can record 8k videos at 30fps. The second camera has a 13-megapixel sensor and ultra-wide angle lens and the third camera is a 5-megapixel sensor with a close-up lens for ‘macro photos’. The selfie camera with 24-megapixel sensor is concealed in a border above the screen. As a result, there is no hole or notch in the screen.

The ROG Phone 5 Pro and Ultimate versions have LEDs on the back and a matrix pattern on which animations can be displayed. The smartphones are also equipped with ASUS’ AirTrigger 5 technology, which are shoulder buttons that work by means of ultrasonic sound. According to the manufacturer, they are improved compared to the previous ROG Phone models.

ASUS reports that the phones can be pre-ordered and the web store states that the ROG Phone 5 will be delivered from March 29. That is the cheapest version. More expensive versions will follow later.

The ROG Phone 5 is the successor to the ROG Phone 3. ASUS probably skips a number because 4 is an unlucky number in China. The pronunciation of four is similar in Chinese to the pronunciation of the word ‘death’.
