The ProCam 2 app has been updated to enable video capture at the 4k resolution of 4096×2160 pixels. To use that feature, at least an iPhone 5s is required and the iPhone 6 models allow recording at a higher frame rate.

ProCam 2 is a paid photo and video app for iOS, which has been given the option of 4k recording with the latest update, writes iCulture. The iPhone 5s can shoot video at that resolution at 25fps; with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, that’s 30fps. The app itself costs 1.99 euros, but the 4k recordings require an in-app purchase of 4.99 euros. This makes the option much cheaper than that of the first app with comparable 4k video recording, Vizzywig, which cost the equivalent of 800 euros on release. That app also only offered the functionality on iOS 7 and would not work on iOS 8.

The way ProCam 2 gets to the 4k resolution is by continuously shooting 8-megapixel photos throughout the recording and then stitching the resulting images together and combining them with an audio recording. That’s the same method Vizzywig used, but couldn’t get it to work on iOS 8. A Brazilian YouTuber has published a video of a 4k recording allegedly shot with ProCam 2.
