According to SuperData, Facebook sold nearly 1.1 million Oculus Quest 2 headsets in the fourth quarter of last year. The analyst firm expects 87 percent of all VR headsets sold by 2021 to be a standalone like the Quest.

Never before have so many copies of a VR headset been sold in a quarter, SuperData writes. Only the Samsung Gear VR was delivered more in one quarter. That was in the fourth quarter of 2016, when 1.4 million Gear VRs were shipped. However, that is not a complete headset, but an accessory for smartphones.

The Oculus Quest 2 was many times more popular than other VR headsets. According to SuperData, 125,000 units of the PSVR, 61,000 units of the Valve Index and 55,000 units of the Oculus Rift or Rift S were sold in the last three months of last year. Windows Mixed Reality headsets like the new HP Reverb G2 are not coming back in the numbers.

In its annual report on the game market, SuperData previously wrote that fewer VR headsets were delivered in 2020 than in 2019, but that is due to the disappearance of ‘mobile headsets’ such as Samsung’s Gear VR. Shipments of standalone headsets such as the Quest and Quest 2 increased to 3.4 million units.

According to SuperData, the popularity of standalone headsets will continue to grow and that category is expected to account for 87 percent of all VR headsets this year. The analyst firm attributes this to the ability to play PC games with a Quest or Quest 2 as well. SuperData thinks only dedicated enthusiasts will opt for headsets like the Valve Index and HP Reverb G2.
