Deliveries of video cards rose sharply in the past quarter. That reports analyst firm Jon Peddie Research. In the second quarter of 2021, 37 percent more GPUs would have been delivered than in the second quarter of 2020.

According to Jon Peddie Research, approximately 123 million GPUs were shipped in the second quarter of 2021. That’s a 37 percent increase from a year ago and a 3.4 percent increase from the first quarter. That is striking, according to the analyst firm; GPU deliveries are usually lower in the second quarter than in the previous quarter. At the same time, the demand for GPUs remains high, partly due to the persistent chip shortages.

The CPU market has also grown considerably compared to a year ago. Processor shipments are said to have increased by 42 percent year-over-year. Compared to the first quarter of 2021, manufacturers delivered 3.5 percent more CPUs.

The analyst firm also reports that AMD’s total GPU market share fell slightly in the second quarter of 2021. That company’s market share was about 17.65 percent last year, but it is now 16.48 percent. Nvidia’s market share is currently 15.23 percent and Intel’s is 68.29 percent. However, that includes integrated GPUs, which are incorporated in processors, for example.

AMD’s market share also declined in the field of single video cards. That was 20 percent in the second quarter of 2020, but is now at 17 percent. Nvidia’s market share rose from 80 percent to 83 percent. Jon Peddie Research does not mention market share percentages for the CPU market, but Mercury Research recently did research on this.

Jon Peddie Research also expects the installed base of GPUs to grow by 3.5 percent annually between 2020 and 2025. That would put 3.3 billion units in use by the end of that period. The analyst firm also predicts that 25 percent of the GPUs used in five years would be separate video cards.
