Google has announced that Gmail is entering the ‘Gemini era’. This means that a lot of AI functions will become available that should help you save time and work smarter. Google revealed this in a blog postwhich reports that the new AI features powered by Gemini 3 – the company’s artificial intelligence – will first roll out in the United States, but will come to more regions and more languages than just English in the coming months. It’s important to note that several AI features will only be available to G1 Ultra and Pro subscribers, but there are also features that will be useful to free Gmail users.

AI Inbox

But what exactly do the new AI features for Gmail mean? First of all, there is the updated AI Inbox. Although you can choose to continue using the ‘normal’ Gmail interface, you can also opt for the AI view. For example, the AI Inbox provides an overview of all the important plans you have made. Think of reservations at restaurants, appointments, planned trips and purchase confirmations. Gmail also suggests which emails have priority and therefore require a response from you first. The feature can now be used by so-called ‘Trusted Testers’ in the United States.

For paid users

G1 Ultra and Pro subscribers in the US can also use other AI features in Gmail. There is now ‘AI Overviews’, which should make searching in your Gmail a lot easier. Now when you search in your mailbox, you just have to hope that you find an email or contact person you need with the right search terms. AI Overviews, however, ensures that Gemini thinks along smartly. For example, if you ask which plumber you received a bill from when renovating your bathroom last year, he will find it in no time. The new Proofread function is also intended for G1 Ultra and Pro subscribers. This AI tool improves your grammar and word choice where necessary, and, if desired, entire sentences are adjusted to make them easier to read.

Free features

Fortunately, Gmail’s new AI features aren’t just for paid members. For example, in the US – and later also in other regions – ‘Help Me Write’ and ‘Suggested Replies’ are now available, an evolution of Smart Replies. Gmail and Gemini use the context of your conversation to suggest ready-made responses that also match your writing style. A specific feature of the AI Overviews mentioned above will also be available to everyone, namely the ability to summarize entire email conversations. Conversations sometimes consist of dozens of emails, and these summaries that appear at the top of such an email conversation concisely summarize the content.
