AMD will start shipping Athlon 3000 APUs for laptops in early 2020. It concerns an Athlon Gold and an Athlon Silver, two dual cores with a TDP of 15W, with which AMD focuses on the entry-level and mainstream market.

The AMD Athlon Gold 3150U is a dual-core with support for simultaneous multithreading, so it can work on four threads. The AMD Athlon Silver 3050U dual core does not support SMT and the integrated Vega chip is also less powerful.

The mobile Athlon 3000 processors are still based on the first Zen architecture and based on a 14nm production process. AMD will start deliveries to laptop manufacturers sometime early this year, after which the first laptops with the chips should follow soon. With the chips, AMD offers competitors for Intel’s Pentium Gold and Silver socs.

AMD announced the Ryzen 4000 Mobile processors last week. They are built on the Zen 2 architecture and produced at 7nm. With these processors, AMD is targeting high-end laptops and mainstream models.

Update Tuesday, 10.20: Initially the message said that the processors were probably produced on TSMC’s 12nm node, but as deregtx and kidde rightly point out, it is a 14nm production process from GlobalFoundries. AMD is contractually obliged to purchase wafers from GlobalFoundries for the production of 12nm and higher. AMD also reports in the specifications of the Athlon 3000 chips that it is a 14nm process.
