Adobe releases successor to Flash Professional ‘Animate CC’

Adobe has renamed its animation software Flash Professional to Animate CC. In addition to the other name, a large number of other changes have been made. The animation package will continue to support Flash.

According to Adobe, even without the name change, it is one of the largest updates that the software package has received. For example, the company announced in November that Animate was linked to Adobe’s Creative Cloud and that it would become possible to export video at multiple resolutions. Furthermore, Adobe had already said it would focus more on HTML5 without ending support for Flash.

Much of what the update adds was already announced, but a few things are new. For example, type kits are integrated into html5 canvas documents, and there is also support for html5 canvas templates to be modified with code editors. Also, many things have been adjusted regarding the editing tools.

Adobe Flash suffers from a negative image because of the vulnerabilities in the Flash Player. For example, several zero-day vulnerabilities were discovered in Flash in 2015. This is one of the reasons why many companies such as YouTube and Twitch have stopped using the player.

The transition from Flash Professional to Animate CC is a further indication that Adobe itself also wants to leave Flash behind, and the new Animate name should better reflect that the software has grown into a broader animation package than Flash alone.
