$99 Android game console designed by OLPC designer
A start-up is working on the Ouya, a console that runs on Android, is completely open source, will get free games and should hit the market for $99. The design comes from Yves Béhar, the man behind the Jambox and the OLPCs.
The Verge discovered that Béhar designed a cube-shaped game console that goes through life as Ouya. The console should be available for 99 dollars, runs on Android and is completely open source. The console even comes with a software development kit so buyers can write software for the device themselves. The games that come out for the Ouya will all be free. It is unknown when the device will be released on the market. The news about the console can only be followed via AngelList.
The company of the same name behind the Ouya has more big names on board. For example, Ed Fries is known as an advisor to the project. Fries was ‘president of game publishing’ during the period that Microsoft introduced the first Xbox. Muffi Ghadiali is also involved in the project, who worked on the Kindle at Amazon’s Lab126. Also on board are Amol Sarva, known for the failed email reader Peek, and Peter Pham, who worked on video streaming service Color. The company is led by Julie Uhrman, who is a senior at the IGN group. Yves Béhar, a Swiss-born designer, previously conceived the design of both One Laptop Per Child models and the Jambox, a bluetooth speaker.
